A College of Social Work Consultation paper was published in March 2010 about the Purpose and Functions of the College of Social Work (5 pages in length). This is still freely available to download from the College of Social Work website at www.collegeofsocialwork.org Some of the main issues outlined in the consultation paper are summarised below: |
||
| The College will be an independent organisation, led and run by social workers to provide strong leadership for the social work profession. | ||
| The College aims to be a powerful and independent voice, promoting good practice and pride in social work. | ||
| Initially, it will cover England, but could eventually develop as a UK body. | ||
| The College aims to work collaboratively with service users and their carers, allied professions and other organisations and to build strong links with other membership bodies such as trade unions. | ||
| The current proposal is that the College of Social Work will work collaboratively with/alongside the GSCC/regulatory body for social work but will remain independent/separate from it. |
|
|
| The College aims to have a key role in developing, upholding and supporting high professional standards through: agreeing/establishing standards that employers of social workers should meet for employing, supervising, supporting and developing social workers at all levels of seniority; to establish and promote professional standards for good practice/the personal responsibilities of individual social workers in a range of different work settings; and agree, promote and uphold the values, purpose and reserved functions of social work. | ||

Possible issues to consider/provide feedback on to the NOPT co chairs via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it The relationship between the College of Social Work and existing social work membership organisations such as NOPT and BASW. Is there still a role/need for NOPT to promote practice teaching and practice education issues alongside the College of Social Work as a separate membership organisation ? Should NOPT consider linking or even amalgamating into the College of Social Work or continue to remain as a separate membership based organisation? What are the implications for future membership levels for smaller social work membership organisations(such as NOPT) if in the future, individuals will be paying membership subscriptions to the College of Social Work, GSCC for registration as well as other membership fees such as for NOPT. |
||
| What do you feel about the currently outlined/suggested role and purposes of a College of Social Work (set up in response to the recommendations of the Social Work Task Force)? Does anything need changing? If so, what? Is there anything missing from the current proposals that you think should be included? | ||
| It is your chance to have your say and influence the direction of the Social Work College. Every view and comment received is important and as NOPT, any specific views you have about the future direction NOPT should take in the light of these developments, is also of key importance to us. |
